Anyone interested in developing the knowledge and techniques required for the safe use of surface marker buoys (SMBs) and delayed surface marker buoys (DSMBs) should consider taking this Specialty course. A PADI Open Water Diver, 12 years of age or older may enroll in this course.
During the course of two open water dives, usually conducted in one day, you will learn to understand the value and risks of having and using SMBs or DSMBs, the need for proper training when deploying SMBs or DSMBs, the local protocols or requirements, and proper techniques for using SMBs or DSMBs.
The knowledge development portion of this course is covered in pre-dive and post-dive briefings or during a classroom presentation prior to the first dive.
For more information, please refer to my Training Tips page on How to Use a Surface Marker Buoy.
You’ll need your basic scuba equipment, to include appropriate exposure protection (e.g. wetsuit or dive skin). A knife or cutting tool, reel, and SMB are also required.
